These two views articulate different conceptions of rationality. While abstract universalism dismisses the insights of the historical sciences of culture, relativism allows itself to be overwhelmed by them. On the one side the various religious truths fall victim to the critique of a unified reason; on the other this universal reason shatters into a kaleidoscope of incompatible truths. Given such assumptions, intercultural understanding would be either unproblematic or meaningless. More reflective answers to the challenge of historicism can be found in another direction, most obviously in contextualism, which is equally sceptical about the assumption of a universal human reason.

Here too philosophy appears in a strange double role. In the form of substantive metaphysical doctrines it raises strong truth claims which cannot, however, be universalized. Such doctrines cannot expect to achieve a rational consensus in their competition with similarly comprehensive religious doctrines. In the role of a theory of justice, philosophy changes sides; but even then it puts forward a form of 'knowledge' which remains dependent on the approval of the various faiths. Connected with the `thin' conception of justice which political philosophy proposes is simply the hope for an acceptance which would be based on a fortunate convergence of non-public reasons.

They state what should be done, whereas the point of statements which are descriptive or capable of truth is to represent what is the case. On these assumptions, the mere fact of deontic logic throws up a disturbing question. On the one hand, such a logic analyses relations between prescriptive sentences and thus appears to submit to its laws a body of statements which are incapable of truth. On the other hand, logical relations such as consequence and contradiction have the clear status of truthpreserving or truth-destroying relations between statements.
