Third, Adorno was adverse to Lukács’ emphasis on labor. Although he, in the late essay “Marginalia to Theory and Praxis” and elsewhere, argues that praxis “arose from labor” (1998b: 262), he remained skeptical of Lukács’ identification of praxis with social labor. In Adorno’s account, praxis, involving an emphatic claim to freedom, transcends the sphere of labor. While praxis may articulate itself in ways that we would count as restricted, it cannot be tied to labor except on pains of forfeiting any possible claim to freedom.

What explains this is that the worker’s activities in advanced industrial production makes it possible to produce commodities whose exchange-value exceeds the cost of maintaining the worker at the subsistence level. The difference between surplus and necessary production can then be appropriated by the employer. Capitalism thus screens the operation by which workers are exploited: what looks like fair exchange is in essence unfair. For both Lukács and Adorno, what is particularly striking in Marx’s analysis of value is how use-value, under capitalism, can only be expressed in terms of exchange-value, thus effecting a misidentification that extends all the way into human consciousness itself.

Reification, though intimately connected with the domination of the exchange process, is the general process whereby social and historical meaning get hypostatized and transcoded such as to be presented in terms of first principles, that is, as static, invariant, and selfidentical. Now the truth-content Adorno is looking for in philosophy and art would by implication carry an emancipatory promise. ” Adorno, it might be argued, turns to meta36 ADORNO’S MARXISM physics not to find meaning in a world of pure transcendence but to undo the claims, reflected in Lukács (and behind him Hegel), for the totality of immanence.
