The term jitter is often used when describing the scatter of arrival times between measurements in the time series. Decades of artificial courses on statistics have convinced many scientists that the distribution of points about the mean must follow a Gaussian ‘normal’ distribution in the limit of large numbers of measurements. This is not true, however; there are ample cases in which the scatter is asymmetric or less uniform than the ‘normal distribution’. 2 The ‘normal’ distribution It has been stated that ‘Everyone believes in the exponential law of errors; the experimenters because they think it can be proved by mathematics; and the mathematicians because they believe it has been established by observation’ (Whittaker and Robinson (1929)).

Then the curve is just a sharp spike at the particular measured value. If we obtain a different answer each time we measure a quantity, then there is a spread of results. Normally, that spread of results will be concentrated around some more or less stable value (fig. 6). 3: The scatter is an estimate of the width of the populated regions of the probability distribution. 4: The delta distribution represents complete certainty. The distribution has a value of 1 at the measured value. 5: The flat distribution is a horizontal line indicating that all measured values, within the shown interval, occur with equal probability.

The users of computer systems are constantly changing the conditions for observations. If the conditions under which observations are made are not constant, then the data lose their meaning: the message we are trying to extract from the data is supplemented by several other messages that are difficult to separate from one another. Let us call the message we are trying to extract signal and the other messages that we are not interested in noise. Complex systems are often characterized by very noisy environments.
